Casino employees give back to the community

Not all the bells ringing at Colusa Casino Resort are on the slot machines, and the biggest jackpot of the year may have nothing to with gaming.

Employees of the casino and the Indian Community purchased gifts for 82 foster children in the Gridley-based Children's Hope organization.

Many of those children live in Colusa County.

"This is the second year we arranged for our employees to get involved," said Amanda Loftis, who headed up the Angel Tree program for the Indian Community. Last year, gifts were purchased for 49 children.

"Every child gave us two requests for what they wanted for Christmas ... and we adopted 82 children."

The hand-written requests from the children, ranging from newborns to 17, were hung on a tree at the casino. The employees then selected a child, and purchased both requests.

"There were a large number of kids who wanted Dora the Explorer; some kids asked for fishing poles; they asked for bikes with helmets or scooters," Loftis said.

"I think the oldest was 17 and she wanted school supplies for college," Loftis said.

Amazingly, few if anyone asked for anything that would be considered too costly or unreasonable.

Judy Quist, who heads the program for Children's Hope, said the social workers contact the children, but there is rarely any need to coach them on not being too extravagant.

In fact, she said, for many the real gift is the joy that comes with the program.

"I think what it primarily brings to them is a joy for Christmas," Quist said. "It just brings them a smile on their faces. It is a Santa for real."

The real Santa, in turn, makes a visit at the Chidren's Hope Christmas parties — one in Gridley and one in Yuba City.

That is where Santa will quietly collect up all the gifts that are donated by the casino employees as well as several other organizations involved, and delivers them to the children on Christmas Eve.

Children's Hope has 175 children in the foster program.

It's not just the children who feel the joy.

"This was employee-driven and employee-funded, and they were so willing to participate," Loftis said.

Los empleados del casino retribuyen a la comunidad

No todas las campanas que suenan en Colusa Casino Resort provienen de las máquinas tragamonedas, el gordo más grande del año puede no tener nada que ver con el juego.

Los empleados del casino y de la Comunidad Indígena compraron regalos para 82 niños acogidos en la organización Children's Hope ubicada en Gridley.

Muchos de estos niños viven en el condado de Colusa.

"Éste es el segundo año que alentamos a nuestros empleados a involucrarse", dijo Amanda Loftis, encargada del programa 'El Árbol Navideño de los Sueños' para la Comunidad Indígena. El año pasado, se compraron regalos para 49 niños.

"Cada niño nos pidió dos cosas que deseaban para navidad ... y le cumplimos el sueño a 82 niños."

Los pedidos escritos a mano por los propios niños, desde los más chiquitos hasta los de 17, fueron colgados en un árbol navideño del casino. Luego, los empleados eligieron a un niño y le compraron esos dos regalos que ellos tanto deseaban.

"Una gran cantidad de niños querían a Dora la Exploradora; algunos pidieron cañas de pescar; también pidieron bicicletas con cascos o patinetes", dijo Loftis.

"Creo que la más grande tenía 17 años y quería útiles escolares", dijo Loftis.

Increíblemente, casi ninguno de ellos pidió regalos considerados demasiado costosos o poco razonables.

Judy Quist, encargada del programa para Children's Hope, dijo que los trabajadores sociales contactan a los niños, pero que prácticamente no es necesario prepararlos para que no pidan regalos demasiado excesivos.

En realidad, dijo que para muchos niños el regalo verdadero es la felicidad que les brinda el programa.

"Creo que lo que este programa les trae, en primer lugar, es la alegría por vivir la navidad", dijo Quist. "Les regala una sonrisa. Indudablemente, es el espíritu de la navidad."

El verdadero Santa se turna para visitar las fiestas navideñas de Chidren's Hope — una en Gridley y otra en Yuba City.

Allí es donde Santa recoge discretamente todos los regalos donados por los empleados del casino así como los de diversas organizaciones involucradas en el programa, y se los entrega a los niños en Nochebuena.

Children's Hope tiene 175 niños en su programa de acogida.

No son sólo los niños los que sienten la dicha.

"Este programa fue manejado y financiado por empleados, quienes estaban totalmente dispuestos a participar", dijo Loftis.
